I followed the Black Keys on their fall 2004 tour for six shows; Omaha, Iowa City, Minneapolis, Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago.
I was there for the soundcheck (see separate blog post for that recording). I watched Pat and Dan load in and load out. Their girlfriends were along for this tour and helped sell merch.
I had a moment to chat with Dan before the show. Here's a little audio clip. There was a yahoo group on the Black Keys at the time. This was before they had their own website and had a fan forum on that site.
Here's the audio recording for the Omaha NE show at the Sokol Underground. Interesting that both Gov't Mule (playing upstairs at the big auditorium) and the Black Keys (playing the Sokol Underground) each covered the Beatles song She Said, She Said that night.

The Cuts opened for the Black Keys on their fall 2004 tour. Here's the audio only recording for the show in Omaha NE at the Sokol Underground. On this tour, I recorded six shows in Omaha, Iowa City, Minneapolis, Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago.
In my notes, I wrote that I had setlists, but I can't find them. I had purchased the two cds they were selling for merch. I'm guessing that most of the sets were on these cds.
The Terminals were a local Omaha band and were the first opener for the Cuts and Black Keys. I missed most of their set being upstairs at the Sokol Auditorium for to see some of the Gov't Mule show.
Here's an old interview from 2004 of the Terminals
I went to Omaha to see the Black Keys perform at the Sokol Underground. Gov't Mule was performing an early show in the big auditorium upstairs, so I was able to see their first set. I bought a hat from their merch, so I could clip my microphones onto it. I wore this for quite a few show recordings.
It was a very loud show and I'm pretty sure I had the mic sensor on high and screwed up the recording. Plenty of other people recording that night. (much better recordings are available)

I returned to Omaha, and the same venue I saw my first Black Keys show at the previous October. I got to town early and went to the Sokol Underground in time to see the band set up and perform their sound check. Gov't Mule was to perform that night in the big auditorium upstairs.
I had set the mic sensor on "high" in error. Very rough sound

I believe this is my first Scott H. Biram show and the first time I met Scott. I used to travel to Milwaukee frequently for business. This show was at the Onopa Brewery. I don't think this venue is still there, or it has changed names or ownership.
Pupy Costello & His Big City Honky Tonk and also The Mighty Lumberhorn were the two opening bands. Joe Buck followed after Scott. I did not record Joe's show.
I'm not 100% sure on the date of this show. It may have been Aug 23 and not Aug 25.

Don't watch this. First, it's not the Jayhawks. I think it was three of them. They just went on hiatis, and three of them opened for Van Morrison at the Northrup. It's just an 8 minute clip, and really poor audio quality. Fair warning.
The Fat Possum Records Juke Joint Caravan came to the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis MN. Paul "Wine" Jones, T-Model Ford and Spam, Kenny Brown and Cedric Burnside. I think Kenny and Ced were billed as "Brown & Burnside". Tour manager, Craig "Sweet Dog" Pickering played drums for Paul.

I used to get to Chicago occasionally for work, and could often schedule a trip to include a show. On This trip, I was able to see Thee Shams at the Abbey Pub. My brother Peter came along and you'll hear a little of our conversation between songs on the recording (sorry about that).
Here's a poster I took from the club.

I convinced Kristen to take a trip to Cleveland for this new year's eve show. We flew in. We had time to take a tour of the rock and roll hall of fame. We took a cab out to the Beachland Ballroom. I made a mistake thinking we'd get a 2am cab back to the hotel after the show, but we hitched a ride with some other fans and it all worked out.
I remember Dan's dad, Chuck, selling posters at the merch table. I was able to get mine signed by Pat and Dan.
I didn't record the opening bands, Party of Helecopters, This Moment in Black History, or Bob's Country Bunker. We did get a front of the stage spot and I positioned myself in a good spot to film. I got the countdown to midnight, but then the camera failed. I didn't know it until the end of the show. Quite disappointing, but that happens. There were several other cameras filming. I think some people were trying to sell a dvd of this, but that was shut down. The big rule for live recording is to share freely and not to profit from audience recordings.
I did have my audio recorder working. This video is a combination of my audio, my short video of the countdown and then the other video that has been posted on youtube.
