My goal has been to get my collection of recordings and related information into one place. One resource for this has been my list on db.etree.org. This database was a way to keep track of my collection and have help organizing and increasing information about setlists, venues, artists, etc. Unfortunately, this website hasn't been available for a few days. I'm concerned that won't come back. That would be a drag.
The other unfortunate situation I created was giving away most of my collection of show recordings on cdr. I had a couple thousand shows that I had traded and collected and never really listened to. I felt good sharing these with others, but I really should have copied all the data before giving it away. Oh well, live and learn.

It had been a tough few months. I sold my business on the 4th. This was my first show after that transaction. It would still be a few more years for the non-compete agreement to complete and the final screwing, but the bulk of the problems were over.
Slick Ballinger performing at the Viking Bar in Minneapolis MN. This was a KFAI hosted event by Jackson's Juke Joint.
Trenton Ayres on bass and Blind Mississippi Morris on harp were in the band.
Richard Johnston had emailed or posted on his website about Jessie Mae Hemphill being evicted from her trailer in Senatobia MS. I contacted Richard about doing a benefit show in Hudson WI. I bought his plane ticket and he came up and did a concert for our neighborhood and we raised several thousand dollars for Jessie Mae. There's much more to that story, and I'll write more about it with the September 2005 recordings.
Waverly Milor sits on on harp for a few songs late in the evening. It's a long show, with a couple set breaks.
This was the Dillo Day Mayfest at Northwestern University. The Black Keys opened for George Clinton. There were a couple other earlier opening bands, but I did not record.
The Black Keys opened for George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars for Northwestern University Dillo Day Mayfest. My brother and I decided to try to attend this unticketed event. There was no security and we were able to walk right in to the festival. Unfortunately, there was security at the stage, and I only got the first five minutes of video. I do have the entire show audio.

I'd had a couple weeks to think about the sale of my company to my partner. The bulk of our business was in Wisconsin, but we had started a Chicago office the year prior. My brother runs this location. I ended up selling my half of the WI business to my partner and then the Chicago company to my brother. I stayed involved with Chicago for about a year and then got out of the business entirely.
I tried to schedule my business trips to Chicago around shows. Sometimes, my brother would join me. I don't think he was at this one.
It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. I had no idea how bad it was going to get.
I walked into The Social in Orlando FL in the late afternoon and found the Black Keys on stage doing a sound check. The bar was empty, except for the bartender and the soundman. I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy seeing Dan give me a nod from the stage. By this time, it was my 20th time seeing them play over 18 months in 9 different states.
I saw them the night before at Skipper's in Tampa. I'd just come from a week long vacation in the Bahamas with Kristen. She flew on home and I got to enjoy a couple days in Florida attending shows.
The Social was near a town square and I had spent a couple hours that afternoon checking out the vendors goods and services. I remember having some boiled peanuts and having a chair massage. After the sound check, I had time for a good meal before coming back for the show.
What I didn't know, was that my business partner had used this week to plan his takeover of our business. When I returned, the first thing he did was demand that I sell my half of the business to him or he would have his lawyer file to dissolve our corporation. On the one hand, I was more than happy to part ways with this sociopath/psychopath. I had many sleepless nights contemplating the potential jailtime/fraud that he put our business at risk for earning more money. His greed, ability to lie, and manipulate people was boundless. On the other hand, I walked away from a very successful business for much less than it was worth. You do find out the friends and family that at are really there to support you in times like these.
I'm so glad I had music to retreat to during these dark times. This process took months to resolve in the middle of 2005, and for several years, the consequences lingered.
Anyway, here's the Black Keys audio at The Social in Orlando FL

This was the third and final show for my weekend trip south. I followed the band from Nashville to Oxford and now Little Rock AR. I had a very early morning flight to get back to Mpls for work the next day. Dan invited me to their afterparty and said they'd be playing some Link Wray. I regret passing up that opportunity for a couple hours sleep.
One memory that does stand out from that night, is Dan watching the Hentchmen right up front and center stage when all the crowd was backed off for the opening act. I joined him and eventually some other folks moved up too. It's a rock show. The bands want you up at the stage and cheering them on.

The Fat Possum Records people were there with guests. The crowd was enthusiastic and everyone was jumping up and down by the end, for me, this caused my recording gear to pull out a plug and I lost the end of the show.
The Hentchmen opened. I don't know why I didn't record them.

I had a very early flight out of Little Rock just a few hours after the show. Dan had invited me to an afterparty and said they'd be playing some Link Wray, but I had to get a little sleep and turned him down. I don't hold many regrets, but passing up that party is one of them.

I thought I recorded the opening band, The Datsuns, but I can't find it.
I had just upgraded equipment from the Sony minidisc recorder to a Nomad Jukebox 3 and also the next level of core sound binaural microphones. Maybe I screwed up the Datsun recording or just lost it somewhere along the way on a harddrive. Perhaps it will turn up later.

Some asshole with a cigar stood right in front of Dan. Dan commented (complained) a couple times about the smoke, but this thick headed preppy fuck (as I remember) didn't have a clue.
The Black Keys at the High Noon Saloon in Madison WI Sep 22, 2004. I had seen several shows already on this fall tour, and now I was following them to Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago.
I saw Pat and Dan before the show outside the club. I had a few of the posters from the night before in Minneapolis, and asked them to sign them for me. They were personalized to myself and a couple friends. We chatted for a bit, and I asked them about the videotaping ban they recently posted on their website. Someone had been selling the New Year's Eve show. I asked them about my shooting video for that night, and they said as long as it was for my own use, it would be fine.
I got into the club during the soundcheck. Pat came and sat with me during the check for the Cuts. He would drink coffee before the shows. A couple nights later, in Chicago, we went to a coffee shop down the street before their show and also shopped at a used record store. Pat and Dan were always friendly. During these early years, it wasn't uncommon to see them greet fans and give autographs.

There was another taper there at this show. I have his alternate recording as well.
The Black Keys played the 7th Street Entry less than a year earlier and now were moving up to the big room at First Ave.
Someone I met through the black keys website forum joined me at the show. We attended many of the same shows the next few years, and he had a habit of chatting during the music (and my recordings). He went batshit crazy a few years ago, so I don't see him anymore.
I met lots and lots of great people through trading live recordings, the black keys forums, and music in general. This was the time of myspace, and that was a terrific place for a music fan. One fellow music lover sent me this patch.
There was a poster for sale at this show and I bought a few copies. I kept one and sent a couple others to friends. I met up with Pat and Dan in Madison WI the next day and had them sign them. This was the first show poster I purchased. There have been many more since.

I followed the Black Keys on their fall 2004 tour for six shows; Omaha, Iowa City, Minneapolis, Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago. There was a show in Missouri between the Omaha and Iowa City dates, but that was just a little too much for my schedule. I could fit the Omaha show into my business travels, and then I motorcycled down to Iowa City for the one night. As I recall, I got a speeding ticket on my way south.
I went straight to the club after the five hour motorcycle ride, and Pat and Dan were finishing their sound check. I sat at the back of the club and Dan came and chatted for a bit. My recorder was running, and here's a bit of the conversation.
For some reason, I only got video for the first half hour of the show.
