2003-12-17 Los Straitjackets

Show #9

A special holiday show for Los Straitjackets.  Th' Legendary Shack Shakers opened

For some reason, I only recorded the first 32 minutes of the set.  Left early? Equipment failer?  I just don't remember.

2003-11-11 Tyler Keith & The Preacher's Kids

Recording #6

I saw T-Model Ford open for Johnny Winter at the Cabooze in early 2003.  That turned me on to Fat Possum Records and I started following many of their bands.  Here's Tyler Keith (also of the Neckbones) opening for 20 Miles.

2003-10-31 Black Keys

Recording #5

After driving to Omaha, then Iowa City, I made my way back home and to Minneapolis to 7th Street Entry to see Thee Shams and the Black Keys for the third night in a row.  Halloween Oct 31st, 2003.  My friend Mike joined me for the show.  He's been to all the Deep Blues Fests and we've seen a lot of bands together.  After videotaping Thee Shams and the Black Keys, I gave Mike my camera to get a photo of Dan and I on the 7th Street Entry stage.  We stood there and I had my arm around Dan, and Mike fiddled with the camera for a couple minutes.  Never got the photo.

Recording #2
I saw Thee Shams open for the Black Keys the day before this in Omaha NE.  I introduced myself to Zach and told him I enjoyed his set.  I asked him if he minded if I recorded their shows in Iowa City and Minneapolis.  He didn't care.  I told him I'd bring a video camera to Minnespolis and try to film the show too.

Here's the audio from Iowa City 2003-10-30

2003-10-29 Black Keys

Recording #1
I first heard of the Black Keys sometime early in 2003.  The record Thickfreakness had just been released on Fat Possum Records and I also purchased their first album The Big Come Up from Alive Naturalsound Records.  They had a tour scheduled through the midwest in late October of 2003, and I made plans to attend the shows in Omaha, Iowa City and Minneapolis.  Their website stated that audience recordings were allowed, and I decided to purchase some equipment.  I found a small Sony minidisc recorder and some binaural microphones.

Thee Shams were the opening band.  There may have been another opener, but I don't recall.

I bought a vinyl copy of Thickfreakness.  I believe Pat and Dan's girlfriends were running the merch.  I had Pat and Dan sign the album after the show.
