The night after the Deep Blues Fest. Chet at 7th Street Entry. I had two cameras. A tripod shot doing the entire set and hand then a handheld camera getting about fifteen minutes. Mark Porkchop Holder joins in on harp for the last portion.

the Deep Blues Fest was over, but several bands were booked at 7th Street Entry for the following night. John Schooley worked his way onto the bill. Another chance to perform to an audience and opportunity to sell some merch.
Robert came out early in the day to the fest. It was cold and rainy. He spent the day sitting in the club house keeping warm, chatting with the other musicians, and drinking whiskey. We bought him a pair of golf gloves and borrowed a jacket from a friend to help keep him warm.
Will was late to the fest. I had no phone number to reach him, and he didn't call us. We gave his set time to KM and Elam. When he did show up, we juggled some times to put him in and got an hour behind schedule.
William Elliott Whitmore was late. I didn't have a cell phone number for him. He didn't call me.
I decided to fill the slot and offered an opportunity for Elam and KM to do a set together. The plan was to keep the fest on schedule. Hillstomp was on next.
Here's a little video of KM and Elam setting up during Radio Moscow.
I mainly knew of Cotton through the Tweed's Blues forum. Always at good time at the fests. Rick joined in on the drums. They practiced in my truck with Rick pounding on the center console.
I knew Robbie from the Black Keys message boards and learned about his band the BirdDogs. I'm so happy they made the trip from MI. Their truck had various troubles and I know they bought at least one tire.
You can see the cold and the rain in this first clip
KM Williams has never been consistent with his billings. CD titles are also under various names.

you get the idea.
Kids, remember this when you name your band. I think it's best to be consistent.
I was recording audio and video all day at the fest and somehow managed to screw up both for the start of KM's set.
The start of the Deep Blues Festival. I think it was in May that I contacted Rick Saunders with the idea of having a small festival. I asked him about using the name "Deep Blues". His website of that name included so many of these bands I was enjoying. Rick was encouraging, and I contacted about 18 bands about their interest in coming North for this event. I planned on hiring four or five for an evening show. When every single band said they wanted to play, I decided to expand this to an all day show.
I spent a crazy amount of money on production, venue, hotel, food, electricity, toilets, stages, etc in addition to the band payments. I would need a thousand people to attend just to break even, let alone making any money for the charity we were hoping to benefit. After 90 days of drought, the day of our fest had an all day rain. We had one hundred paid tickets. That's Deep Blues.
There's plenty of stories and things to share about the fest. More than I can remember or want to write about here. We had artwork designed by Justin DeGarmo.

OK. back to the recordings. Here's Johnny Lowebow to start off the very first fest.
Chet Weise came up for the first Deep Blues Festival in 2007 to perform as a solo artist using the stage name Sweet Velvet C. He arranged a pre-fest show at the Turf Club with Chooglin'.
When I booked KM for the Deep Blues Festival, I asked him how many nights he wanted to come up to stay. He said he wanted to be there all week. I agreed and got him a hotel room and helped work out a couple days to busk before the fest. Here he is in front of Knoke's Chocolates in Hudson WI.
I have a separate audio recording that's about two hours. The video is only one hour.
Oops. I've tried to put these up in chronological order. Somehow I skipped this 2006 Hank III show. Oh well, I hope I don't make too many errors over the next 1500 or so shows.
This was at First Ave in Mpls MN. Murder Junkies opened and I did not record. I only recorded the country set and not the Assjack.

At First Ave in Minneapolis MN. I was going out to shows that summer to hand out flyers for the Deep Blues Festival. I didn't record the opening bands. I also didn't stay to record the Assjack set.
Dan's dad offered me a ticket to Lallapalooza in Chicago.
I met Chuck and Mary at the ticket office. It took a little while to find them on the guest list, but we got our credentials and went into the fest.
Chuck explained he had no idea if I would be able to get backstage access, but I just hiked along with them. Jamie was working as the tour manager and Chuck was able to get him on the phone to meet us and get us backstage. We hung out in the VIP area and talked for about an hour, waiting for the show. MIA had just finished performing and most of the people in that area seemed to be with her. I think Southern Comfort must have been a sponsor and they were offering drinks. I don't recall anything other very special than some shade and some places to sit.
When the show was ready to start, I was able to follow along to the side stage access. We were on a second level platform. My recording starts with some conversation with Chuck.

Moreland and Arbuckle at Dick's Bar in Hudson WI. We did another benefit for the Bridge For Hudson Youth. These guys played three sets totaling about two and half hours of music.
I traveled down to Davenport IA to attend the IH MS Valley Blues Fest. It was a three day event. For day one, I made sure to get there in time to see Robert Belfour.
The Black Keys did a tour sponsored by Camel Cigarettes (RJR Tobacco). The venue listed the show, but we had no idea how to get tickets. It turned out to be a free show, and you had to get there early to get a ticket. A friend and I got there in the early afternoon and were first in line. We got our tickets and then worked our way into the club before the show to hear the sound check.
Dan came and chatted with us a for a couple minutes after the sound check. We reminded him of his comments to us from their last tour thorugh MN when he said "they'll never have the big tour bus". Here he was with a huge production traveling with several buses. The tobacco people had tons of signage they were putting all through the club. The put up a special smoking lounge out back of the club and had extra deluxe toilets brought in for the lounge. There was a staff of about 10 handling video and sound production. I don't know what they did with their recordings, but I've never seen any released. Free cigarettes were being handed out.
One of the tobacco reps had a handfull of after show passes. We got some and went to the meet and greet after the show and got a free cd. Pat and Dan were signing them and we were able to chat a little more.

My wife Kristen was on the board of directors of a local charity, The Bridge for Hudson Youth. It is a high school program working on transition and life skills for disabled kids.
We decided to host a little fundraiser at a local bar and give Moreland and Arbuckle another gig in the area before they left town.
I had two cameras at this show. The tripod shots are the complete show (sets 1 and 2) and the handheld is about half the show.
They played a radio show at KFAI in the afternoon and then had this club show at night.
I had two cameras, so I did a tripod shot and hand held shot for both sets. I'll only post the tripod shots right now.

After recording three bands in two other bars that night, I stopped for one more drink at Dick's Bar in Hudson WI to catch a song by Jeff Loven. He was just starting his third set and played his song Heavy Metal Polka.
Parker Griggs got his demo into the hands of Dan Auerbach who got them signed to Alive Records. I was always interested in anything Dan was involved with. This was my first Radio Moscow show.

I went out to St Paul to see Radio Moscow. I was early so I went to another club nearby to see Charlie Parr. I was there in time for the opener, Jeff Mitchell, but left before Charlie played go to Big V's to see the other bands.
I left Raleigh NC Biram and the Heavies the night before. I had one more night of music in Nashville before going home. Mark was playing at the Family Wash.

The rock'n'roll lifestyle was taking a toll on everyone. Tired, hungover, generally grumpy. Get fired up for the show and wind down with no real rest and another long drive for the next day. This was my last night to see these guys. They had many more cities and days ahead of tour. After the set, John was straight to the van and asleep in minutes. I watched Scott's set with Van and said goodbye. An older woman was putting a hard sell on Scott. It took about three sentances to spell out that she was alone, from out of town, had a hotel room, and wanted Scott in that room. I left while she was still shoving a room card at Scott and he wanted none of it.
Tough to pass up a couple Florida shows and seeing more friends on the way, but it was time to head home.
I don't remember why Chris didn't play the night before in Knoxville. I do remember some fan handing him a plastic mountain dew bottle half full of moonshine. Probably a 12 oz bottle with a good 6 oz left in it and Chris sucked it down in one pull.
Everyone was a little rough from the last four nights. This had to be my last show before turning back towards home. The bands were headed south to Florida for the next part of the tour.
Here's the last time I saw Chris perform. I've followed him online the past ten years. I really enjoy the advice videos. It will be a treat to see him soon in Minneapolis opening for Deer Tick.
Also, if you havent' watched the Black Diamond Heavies shows from this tour, you need to see Chris joining them for Traditional Blues Song. They did that most every show.
At the Pilot Light in Knoxville TN. The first 18 min of this video are the sound checks for Biram and the Heavies. I don't know why Chris Crofton didn't open this show as well.
Scott had a radio show scheduled in Knoxville TN at WUTK in the afternoon before the show that night at the Pilot Light. He invited me along and I filmed.
Rare acoustic unamplified Scott. First two minutes have some digital issues, but it clears up.

I learned quickly that the travel plans for the Black Diamond Heavies meant leaving to drive to the next gig was at the last possible minute. They left no room for error. Hit the road and show up at load in and sound check. This isn't how I typically travel. I'm cautious. I leave time for traffic, sightseeing, unplanned stops, etc. But when you want to caravan with the band, you follow their lead.
This day, it first meant tracking down one of the band who found a place to stay with a local. The local happened to be a dancer, and we met up with them at her place of work. We spent the afternoon until we just had time to make the drive to Atlanta.
Here's Chris Crofton at the Star Bar in Atlanta GA

I left Nashville and had a day before the Biram/Heavies show in Birmingham AL, so I drove to Jackson TN to visit another musician Elam Mcknight. We got beer and bbq and hung out at his grandfather's house and talked music. For some reason, Elam had an amp of Steve Greer's and I picked it up and returned in to Steve the next week as I came through Nashville again.
I can't remember the route from Jackson to Birmingham, but I'm guessing it was back roads. The club in Birmingham had a RV/greenroom next to it. This was the start of a really fun tour with Biram and the Heavies. Also, the first time I got to meet Chris Crofton. Chris will be touring with Deer Tick soon. Really looking forward to their Minneapolis show.
Mark had left the Black Diamond Heavies a year earlier. He was living in Nashville and busking on Broadway. He had a couple gigs booked in at the Family Wash on Feb 4th and Feb 11th. I timed my trip to attend both these shows. This was the first time I saw him play solo.

In December of 2006, I completed my obligations with a business I sold and I entered 2007 unemployed. Also betrayed and cheated by friends and family, I turned to music for comfort. The next twenty something recordings are from this tour. I don't remember the reason for changing the Feb 10th stop from Louisville to Raleigh, but the trip began and ended with Nashville on Feb 4th and 11th.
I planned a road trip for early February. It started with driving down to Nashville to visit a friend having a house party. Steve Greer has documented more live music than anyone I know. Someday this collection needs to come to light.
Here's the flyer for his preSuperbowl party, which has absolutely nothing to do with the Superbowl.
