2007-06-28 The Black Keys

Recording #267

The Black Keys did a tour sponsored by Camel Cigarettes (RJR Tobacco).  The venue listed the show, but we had no idea how to get tickets.  It turned out to be a free show, and you had to get there early to get a ticket.  A friend and I got there in the early afternoon and were first in line.  We got our tickets and then worked our way into the club before the show to hear the sound check.

Dan came and chatted with us a for a couple minutes after the sound check.  We reminded him of his comments to us from their last tour thorugh MN when he said "they'll never have the big tour bus".  Here he was with a huge production traveling with several buses.  The tobacco people had tons of signage they were putting all through the club.  The put up a special smoking lounge out back of the club and had extra deluxe toilets brought in for the lounge.  There was a staff of about 10 handling video and sound production.  I don't know what they did with their recordings, but I've never seen any released.  Free cigarettes were being handed out.

One of the tobacco reps had a handfull of after show passes.  We got some and went to the meet and greet after the show and got a free cd.  Pat and Dan were signing them and we were able to chat a little more.

I think there was a regular Tues gig on Peavey Plaza in Minneapolis in the summer.  Live after Five?

Here's the Hackensaw Boys.  Not sure if it was billed as Ruby Jane with the Hackensaw Boys or maybe the Hackensaw Boys with Ruby Jane Smith.

2007-03-23 Moreland and Arbuckle

Recording #259

My wife Kristen was on the board of directors of a local charity, The Bridge for Hudson Youth.  It is a high school program working on transition and life skills for disabled kids.

We decided to host a little fundraiser at a local bar and give Moreland and Arbuckle another gig in the area before they left town.

I had two cameras at this show.  The tripod shots are the complete show (sets 1 and 2) and the handheld is about half the show.

2007-02-10 The Black Diamond Heavies

Recording #250

At the Hideaway in Raleigh NC.

The rock'n'roll lifestyle was taking a toll on everyone.  Tired, hungover, generally grumpy.  Get fired up for the show and wind down with no real rest and another long drive for the next day.  This was my last night to see these guys.  They had many more cities and days ahead of tour.  After the set, John was straight to the van and asleep in minutes.  I watched Scott's set with Van and said goodbye.  An older woman was putting a hard sell on Scott.  It took about three sentances to spell out that she was alone, from out of town, had a hotel room, and wanted Scott in that room.  I left while she was still shoving a room card at Scott and he wanted none of it.

Tough to pass up a couple Florida shows and seeing more friends on the way, but it was time to head home.

2007-02-10 Chris Crofton

Recording #249

I don't remember why Chris didn't play the night before in Knoxville.  I do remember some fan handing him a plastic mountain dew bottle half full of moonshine.  Probably a 12 oz bottle with a good 6 oz left in it and Chris sucked it down in one pull.

Everyone was a little rough from the last four nights.  This had to be my last show before turning back towards home.  The bands were headed south to Florida for the next part of the tour.

Here's the last time I saw Chris perform.  I've followed him online the past ten years.  I really enjoy the advice videos.  It will be a treat to see him soon in Minneapolis opening for Deer Tick.

Also, if you havent' watched the Black Diamond Heavies shows from this tour, you need to see Chris joining them for Traditional Blues Song.  They did that most every show.

Scott had a radio show scheduled in Knoxville TN at WUTK in the afternoon before the show that night at the Pilot Light.  He invited me along and I filmed.

Rare acoustic unamplified Scott.  First two minutes have some digital issues, but it clears up.

I learned quickly that the travel plans for the Black Diamond Heavies meant leaving to drive to the next gig was at the last possible minute.  They left no room for error.  Hit the road and show up at load in and sound check.  This isn't how I typically travel.  I'm cautious.  I leave time for traffic, sightseeing, unplanned stops, etc.  But when you want to caravan with the band, you follow their lead.

This day, it first meant tracking down one of the band who found a place to stay with a local.  The local happened to be a dancer, and we met up with them at her place of work.  We spent the afternoon until we just had time to make the drive to Atlanta.

Recording #235

I left Nashville and had a day before the Biram/Heavies show in Birmingham AL, so I drove to Jackson TN to visit another musician Elam Mcknight.  We got beer and bbq and hung out at his grandfather's house and talked music.  For some reason, Elam had an amp of Steve Greer's and I picked it up and returned in to Steve the next week as I came through Nashville again.

I can't remember the route from Jackson to Birmingham, but I'm guessing it was back roads.  The club in Birmingham had a RV/greenroom next to it.  This was the start of a really fun tour with Biram and the Heavies.  Also, the first time I got to meet Chris Crofton.  Chris will be touring with Deer Tick soon.  Really looking forward to their Minneapolis show.

Mark had left the Black Diamond Heavies a year earlier.  He was living in Nashville and busking on Broadway.  He had a couple gigs booked in at the Family Wash on Feb 4th and Feb 11th.  I timed my trip to attend both these shows.  This was the first time I saw him play solo.

Recording #232

In December of 2006, I completed my obligations with a business I sold and I entered 2007 unemployed.  Also betrayed and cheated by friends and family, I turned to music for comfort. The next twenty something recordings are from this tour.  I don't remember the reason for changing the Feb 10th stop from Louisville to Raleigh, but the trip began and ended with Nashville on Feb 4th and 11th.

I planned a road trip for early February.  It started with driving down to Nashville to visit a friend having a house party.  Steve Greer has documented more live music than anyone I know.  Someday this collection needs to come to light.

Here's the flyer for his preSuperbowl party, which has absolutely nothing to do with the Superbowl.

2006-12-10 Cool Disposition

Recording #231

At the Minnesota Music Cafe in St Paul MN.  A fundraiser for the Road To Memphis for the IBC.

This is my last recording for 2006.  I finished my commitment that year to help my brother with his Chicago bonding office.  I entered 2007 being unemployed.  2006 was a great year for seeing music and trading audience recordings.  The neighborhood block party with Scott H. Biram and the Black Diamond Heavies was a lot of fun for me and eventually inspired an even larger project for 2007.
